    in Books

Eye Contact Over Truk with Stephanie Woodman
The idea for Eye Contact Over Truk came to Stephanie in 1996 during a scuba trip to Truk Lagoon. She put the project on pause during her career and finished it in earnest after her retirement in 2021. With the additional two decades of life experience, her writing transformed to explore themes of perseverance, forgiveness, grief, loss, life, love, and adventure.
Eye Contact Over Truk is a heartrending work of historical fiction. If you like nuanced characters, emotional journeys, and surreal backdrops, then you’ll love Stephanie Woodman’s thought-provoking exploration of the past.
Stephanie Woodman is an avid collector of experiences and a perpetual student of life. Despite her analytical background with a long engineering career and a short tenure as a high school math teacher, Stephanie has a powerful creative side which has manifested itself in her debut novel, Eye Contact Over Truk.

    Wanda's Picks Radio Show

    in Art

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! We continue our series on Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower: The Election Episode. We speak to Nube Brown, sister broadcaster, at KPOO 89.5 FM in San Francisco. Her series on CA prisons has a wide following. She joins us to talk about parallels between Butler's dystopian California, USA 2024 and California, USA now. There is an election and the protagonist Lauren Oya Olamina and her chosen family are headed to north, from LA. They settle in Humbodlt County, which happens to be where Nube raised her son and where her mother still resides.  We talk about ballot measures, specifically 6, 33, and 36. Listen up. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the episode and other related themes or topics.  Musically, we feature: Nana Sula Spirit's "Oya, The Transformer featuring Sunni Patterson (poet)."

Part 2: Close Up Radio Welcomes Back Artist Cheryl Yellowhawk

    in Visual Arts

Largo, FL - In a four-part interview, we dive into the colorful world of fine artist, Cheryl Yellowhawk, a lifelong painter, who stirs our emotions and innermost feelings with her spiritual artwork, Native American background, Southwestern landscapes, colorful still life paintings, expressive floral compositions, vibrant birds and animals, beautiful women, joyful children and family pets.
Cheryl loves to paint representational objects that tell a heartfelt story. She has written several books combining both her beautiful artwork and inspirational poetry.  Her books are a healing journey through the depths of dissociative identity disorder, post traumatic disorder, and depression following the traumatic death of her mother in a five-car fatal accident when she was 35 years old.  This life altering event careened her life’s course from that of a devoted mother of two children, a Registered Nurse, and active member of the community to a person recovering from delayed grief symptoms and then striving for the recovery her authentic self.
Cheryl’s world changed when she began a 6-week drawing and beginner’s painting class at the local High School in her small town.
Cheryl in particular deeply loves painting flowers which she describes as breathtakingly gorgeous.
As she continues to grace us with her masterful artwork, Cheryl also teaches at the beach art center one or two days a week helping others on their own artistic journey.
Another notable accomplishment is that her oil painting entitled “Eagle in Flight”, was published in the 2002 “Dreams and Visions” calendar and also toured with the Smithsonian Exhibit of “Birds of Raptor” countrywide exhibit.

Part 3: Close Up Radio Welcomes Back Scholar and Linguist Dr. Rory Palmieri

    in Film

Bowie, MD - Film historian and academic scholar Dr. Rory Palmieri is a man on a mission—a mission to bring long-overdue recognition to Miklós Jancsó, the Hungarian filmmaker who is the most under-appreciated major filmmaker of the 20th century. Despite devoting four and a half years of his life to this monumental project, Palmieri acknowledges he still has two more years to go before he can complete his manuscript.
He emphasizes that Jancsó’s work is almost entirely unknown outside of Hungary, despite the filmmaker’s critical acclaim domestically. “Jancsó’s films are rarely seen; even scholars and critics who attended international film festivals often missed them,” Palmieri laments.  Although the director is mentioned and briefly discussed in numerous textbooks and articles in English, only a few early masterpieces have made it into film festivals and home video in the U.S. The bulk of this great artist’s work is unavailable anywhere in the world, except perhaps in the Hungarian Film Archive in Budapest.
Rory Palmieri is an accomplished film historian and language expert with a doctorate in English focused on American literature and film. He has worked in government service as a translator and has a long-standing passion for literature, cinema, and languages. In addition, he is an amateur filmmaker and has worked on other amateur films and as an extra on Hollywood productions. He is now dedicated to bringing attention to Miklós Jancsó, through his upcoming manuscript.

Part 1: Close Up Radio Welcomes Back Author Bob Danna of My Curious Life

    in Books

Las Vegas, NV – Bob Danna is the author of the book, My Curious Life: If My Grandkids Ask About Me, Tell Them This. Released on April 8th, 2024, it serves as Bob’s memoir and covers more than 70 years of his life growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He describes his interesting career path as a physicist, a naval officer, an engineer, and a business leader.
Starting from raw notes, his memoir offers his inside observations on his life experiences. Originally intending to write this for his grandkids as a personal account of life as a Baby Boomer, he shifted his focus into a perspective of curiosity, love of everything STEM, skepticism, and secular humanism.
Following Bob’s original conversation with Doug Llewelyn on August 21st, a new two-part radio series beginning on October 23rd, will focus specifically on curiosity: how he has applied it to his own life and the world in which he lives and how others can do the same. Bob largely attributes his passion with curiosity to what he calls the Seed Years from 1965 to 1975.
Bob’s Part 2, show, airing October 30th, will speak to those of you who are part of Generation Z (Gen Z), generally defined as those born between 1997 and 2012.
“Gen Z are often curious young adults similar to how the Boomers were in the sixties,” Bob observes.
“What we need to be doing is investing in the next generations,” concludes Bob. “The seeds we sow will determine the future of our country and the world at large.”
For more information, please visit https://mycuriouslife.net/.
You may purchase Bob’s book on Amazon.
