Justin Blake, son of Fair Housing Champion Rev. Jacob Blake, joins us today to discuss a special recognition the city of Evanston will bestow upon his father, a contemporary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the 1960s struggle to pass a Fair Housing Act. African Americans were openly denied the right to rent or buy in certain neighborhoods, making northern cities, like Chicago and Evanston, just as segregated as the Jim Crow south. How far have we come since those times? Where is the affordable housing for working families? Are African Americans being “priced out” of certain areas as a way to maintain segregation? Why are so many people homeless? Is there a way that black independent contractors, black owned financial institutions, black owned business and black families can work together to solve the housing crisis?
