When you actually, really and truly love, care, and want to be with someone, the threat of them leaving you over something inappropriate is real. It doesn't have to be something that plagues you, but it will be something that will make you monitor your behavior. It will keep you honest. We have probably all seen how reckless a person can be when they have no fear that their lover will leave them. It tells you how much a person cares for someone. There are some offenses that will leave you to be single with certain people. It can by lying, cheating, stealing, disrespecting, overspending, being insensitive, having children outside of the relationship, gaining weight, changing appearance, or lifestyle, etc. Most people know what their partners likes and what they will do if you continue to do what they don't like.
