THE GREAT POET EZRA Pound, when newly arrived in Italy in 1958, after 13 yrs of hellish false imprisonment in US mental hospitals, was asked by a reporter what it was like being released from an insane asylum in America. Pound replied that he had never been released from an insane asylum in America, adding that such a thing was impossible because, he said, “All America is an insane asylum.” When he finally walked out the door he was just walking from a relatively small mental ward into a much larger and even more dangerous one
