KATHERINE WHITE HAS always loved gardening and always had a large garden, both flowers and vegetables. Before I retired I had begun to research medicinal plants, and had planted several in my yard. After retirement I began my studies in earnest. I have studied several years with Beverly McFarland, a local herbalist who teaches here on our mountain, about how to identify and use as medicine the plants that grow locally. I have received certificates for her apprenticeship program. I have also received a certificate for Dr. Tieraona Low Dog's program 'Foundations in Herbal Medicine'. I have studied with Rosemary Gladstar, and twice gone for a weeklong program of herbal and spiritual study to Cuernavaca, Mexico at CEDEHC. I consider myself an herbalist, and a continuing student of herbal medicine. I grow many of the plants that I use in my medicines, and I feel my personal relationship with my garden and these plants enhances the power of the medicine. I have given many presentations on medicinal herbs and medicine making. I am an Elder in Kalpulli Teocalli Ollin, and have been with Maestra Laura for 7 yrs. both as apprentice and healer. (a kalpulli is a community, in this case , of healers who work in the traditional style of Mexico) I lead ceremonies and rituals, do spiritual cleansings, platicas (heart to heart talks), herbal consultations, and facilitate the temazcal (Mexican style sweatlodge). I am also a Reiki practitioner and do chakra balancing work. For several years I have pursued independent study of ancient Celtic spiritualism and traditions, and conduct private ceremonies in the Celtic tradition. I am also a published poet and a multi-media artist.
