Soul Town the Sound of Music launches with its guest for April 5, 2014, forma Vice President of Operations for Sound Twon Records, Henry Smith
The topic of this weeks show is the economics of Soul Music/R&B in the past and the status of the R&B/Hip Hop genre presently. This is a very profitable genre and has a very high profile in Pop Music Culture. The amount of marketing capital budgeted for the genre has increased significantly for Social Media and the new technology that will help maximize overall profits. This genre’s commercial impact was displayed when companies like Motown, Stax, Philadelphia International and Solar became multi- million dollar record labels. In all of the cities where music has been successful the entire community has benefited financially. The restaurants and hotels benefit from the economic prosperity. The R&R/Hip Hop genre has a wealth of talent that is stored up in cities like Memphis which we call “Soul Town” we hear the sound of music. The title of my book is “An Excursion In Soul” and one of the main characters in the book was a member of the original Soul Children singing group at Stax Records. The group was formed by Isaac Hayes and David Porter. His first solo album epitomizes the commerciality of soul music. The first two songs on his debut solo album were very powerful in demonstrating the genre’s ability to generate millions of sales. The album was produced by Homer Banks and Chuck Brooks. Hear is J Blackfoot talking about the way of the city. The first two songs are “The Way Of The City” and the smash hit single “Taxi”.
