Virginia colleges ask Northam to end ban on paying student athletes for name, image and likeness. RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC)- Virginia’s colleges and universities are urging Gov. Ralph Northam to allow student athletes to profit off of their name, image and likeness, something the NCAA currently bans. More than a dozen institutions signed a letter asking Northam to make the change through an executive order as a temporary fix. The urgency comes after 16 states passed laws permitting student-athletes to use their NIL for commercial purposes, with some taking effect as early as July 1, 2021, according to the letter.

VIRGINIA

Proposal: House Bill 300 (Session has since ended)

Effective Date: July 1, 2024

Power 5 Schools in the State: 2

Group of 5 Schools in the State: 2

Non-P5/G5, DII or DIII Schools in the State: 33

Total NCAA Institutions in the State: 37

Why are legislators and the Governor holding on this act? What is our responsibility as active sport parents? Will Virginia institutions suffer because of this lack of action from our polititians? Were they put in office to serve the people or to offer blind-leadership? Leadership we follow just because? Should the state take action or should it come from a national perspective? Either way when and why? Join the conversation at 3pm EST .... Call-in 516 453-9932 option #1.
