Kates played and started in NFLPA Collegiate Bowl All Star Game. He also met with 19 teams during the week of the game. Kates also had private workouts with the Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears after his Pro Day. Played CB/FS/KR/PR he was named team captain at  Virginia Union University shortly after transferring from Indiana University.
