Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the 'toons, tuning out the rest of the world, and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This episode we talk female superhero movies, and why are there, like, THREE of them? After THIRTY FIVE YEARS?!
Dan 'Grim' Shea, Marke, and Jimmy The Gent discuss how, for three decades, the only true attempt at a bonafide blockbuster female-lead superhero flick was 1984's Supergirl, starring our guest today Helen Slater. And also how that one, like more than a few big screen superhero attempts back in the 80s, did not exactly find the winning formula. If you haven't seen it since you were a child, don't ruin it by going back to watch it again -- let us ruin it for you instead with a painful walk down celluloid memory lane! With such promise on the Hollywood horizon after the success of actually good superheroine movies like Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel we are inspired and hopeful, and with that in mind we can celebrate how some movies can be dumb regardless of gender. Hallelujah.
Also featuring Marke's roundtable interview with Helen Slater herself (The Legend of Billie Jean, Smallville, The CW's Supergirl), recorded at the 2018 San Diego Comic Con for the upcoming 35th anniversary of the movie's release, just so you don't think it's three clueless males blindly bemoaning systemic sexism in mainstream movies for, like, the entire show...
