The Night before the Solstice is known as Mothernight, Modraniht and is the veneration of the Disir, the Idisi, the Mothers- the female ancestors.
People tend to know about the Warriors who, when they died, went to Odins Hall to feast and fight until Ragnarok, but what about the women? They tended to stick around and watch over the family. On the night before solstice, the Disirblot, or sacrifice to to the Disir was celebrated in the areas of Germanic and Celtic culture before the coming of Christianity. Many of current Christmas customs are remenents of those practices.
Tchipakkan will talk about these.
