In 1967 upon its release date of June 1, Time magazine declared it "a historic departure in the progress of music".  Newsweekcalled it a "masterpiece", comparing the lyrics with classic literary works, and The New Statesman hailed its elevation of pop music to the level of fine art. By 2003, the Library of Congress placed it in the National Recording Registry honoring the work as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number one in its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
