This past week, and today's show, are anniversaries of two of the more horrific events of my lifetime.

On September 5/6, 1972, 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were abducted and murdered at the Olymoic Village in Munich during the 1972 Summer Olympics. The overriding memory I have is Jim McKay's somber, heartfelt, and very eloquent report of the outcome of the event at Furstenfeldbruck, a NATO airbase outside Munich. The terrorists and hostages were flown there by helicopter from the Olympic Village. The botched attempts and weak negotiating of the German police and others from the IOC were borderline pathetic.

And of course, September 11, 2001 saw two commercial passenger jets intentionally flown into the World Trade Center skyscrapers in New York City, a third jet flown into the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and a fourth, after passengers actively revolted, flown into a field near Shanksville, PA.
