Members of the Church who live scattered must use their income, efforts and talents in sustaining those societies and kingdom of the world. To live there usually requires adopting the unions, sales gimmicks, customs, and business practices of the worldly–thus lending support to those kingdoms. Therefore, little or no time can be devoted to building up the society of the Saints.
We are not gathered together to build up the kingdom of this world. The voice of God has not called us together from the uttermost parts of the earth to build up and enrich those who are diametrically opposed to His kingdom and its interests. (Brigham Young, J.D. 12:153)
