Host Tom Merrill explores issues and challenges faced by the volunteer firefighter today. Being a professional firefighter has nothing to do with earning a paycheck but has everything to do with attitude, appearance, commitment, and dedication.

Tonight's show will feature Dr. Harry Carter who has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as both a career firefighter (retiring as a chief officer from the Newark, NJ Fire Department) and a volunteer firefighter (past chief and current fire commissioner in his hometown). Dr. Carter has authored many books and numerous articles, instructs at many conferences and serves on and is affiliated with many fire service organizations. He truly understands today’s fire service and in particular, the issues and challenges faced by volunteer fire departments. His book, “Running a Volunteer Fire Department’ will be the focus of tonight’s how.
