As the Summer Olympics from Paris wind down we still have a chance to not only celebrate the incredible achievements of the participating athletes, but we also still have a chance to savor the flavor of the food from France. A charcuterie board is a great way to savor many flavors of food for a gathering or intimate setting. A charcuterie board is a French appetizer served on a wooden board or stone slab, either eaten straight from the board itself or on tableware. It features a selection of foods such as cured meats and pâtés (a smooth mixture of pre-cooked lean meat with fat made by grinding ingredients together) as well as a variety of cheese, crackers, bread, and fruit. Charcuterie boards can be healthy as long as you’re adding healthy and nutritious options to your board. The health benefits of a charcuterie board include healthy fats, low carbohydrates, rich in vitamins and iron, high in fiber, antioxidants, protein and Omega-3 fatty acids and improves heart health which lowers bad cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart disease. Examples of a healthy charcuterie board include prosciutto, salami, smoked turkey, smoked chicken, cheeses such as cheddar, gouda and brie, and a variety of fruit. So, while the Olympics are still on-going, and you want to enhance your eating experience by indulging in a variety of items put together a charcuterie board for you and your loved ones.
