The jury convicted Nicholas Cruz for the mass shooting at the Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida which killed 17 people. The jury voted for a sentence of life in prison. Many Floridians including the current Governor, Ron DeSantis and two former governors, Charlie Crist and Rick Scott are incensed with the verdict. They wanted the death sentence. Is this because his name is Cruz? A name more aligned with Mexicans and other non-white people? Some are even hoping that the inmates will murder Cruz? Does the death sentence reconcile with your idea of justice? Does a sense of humanity approve the death sentence for people who commit crimes? Do harsh sentences for those who have been processed within the criminal justice system make our society any safer?
