Some of bUneke's volunteers visited Green Gables at Historic Riverview Village in Melbourne, Florida and we fell in love with the lawn, the 19th century Queen Anne architecture, the storyteller and the property's loving caregivers. We also fell in love with the mission of the nonprofit that has taken on the challenge to raise $1Million to purchase the property from its current owners, descendants of the original owners, William and Nora Wells.
The Wells was a family of philanthropists and innovators. Nora's uncle founded Stanford University. Nora and Willam donated land to build Melbourne's first library and auditorium and were instrumental in much of the city's progression.
To lose this home, which is on the National Register of Historical Houses, would be shameful enough, but to have the home and property razed and replaced with another convenience store is unthinkable. Yet, that is the reality this beautiful old home faces if the nonprofit organization determined to Save Green Gables cannot raise the remaining funds by deadline of April 2020. One philanthropist could step up and donate the entire $285,000 necessary to qualify for matching funds or 15,000 philanthropists can each donate just $20 to meet this goal.
Donate in memory of someone or in honor of a loved one and present them with a tax-deductible receipt and know that you are preserving history before it's lost forever.
