On the late afternoon of October 7, 1966, servants at Rough Point, the Gilded Age Newport, Rhode Island mansion of Doris Duke, witnessed a heated argument between Doris and her close confidante, interior designer, Eduardo Tirella. Moments later, as they left the estate, she plowed into him in a two-ton station wagon as he went to open the heavy gates at the end of the drive. Bursting through the gates she dragged him halfway across Bellevue Avenue. As Doris sat stunned behind the wheel, Eduardo’s body lay beneath the car. With massive injuries, he died instantaneously. Ninety-six hours later, with no inquest, his death was deemed accidental. Within days Doris began giving tens of thousands of dollars to the City of Newport.Join us for this exciting interview..
