Convicted of murder, but exonerated years later, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter has returned to His Lord, at the age of 76.

Maintaining his innocence since the triple-murder charges in 1966, in Patterson, N.J., he became for many, a symbol of the insipid racism and rush-to-incarcerate black men, which many argue, exists today.

I recall vividly, his bald, shiny head and goatee mustache. He looked then, that he could go a few rounds for the middleweight championship.

On Monday, SCOTUS ruled in favor of a Michigan voter initiative, banning the use of race, as a factor in admission into college. In a remote sense, this conjures the discussion we had on Critical Discourse, regarding the efficacy of admissions exams for NYC “elite” high schools.

The reaction was swift, but most strikingly, one of the justices, Sonia Sotomayor, in dissent, harshly criticized the decision, going as far as accusing the majority in the 6-2 ruling, of being “out of touch…”. In my view, such a public tantrum is unprofessional and in bad taste.

But, to be frank, couldn’t one argue that a college should have the right, as opposed to the obligation, to consider race?

What will this mean for black and Latino students, who purportedly will be “locked out” of opportunities for [material] advancement?

THIS DECISION DOES NOT GRANT A COLLEGE THE RIGHT TO USE RACE AS A REASON TO DENY ADMISSION!

Incidentally, Cliven Bundy made some controversial comments, with regards to race, which are worth discussing

AS ALWAYS – I can’t wait for the discussion, which is always better when you come on board and share your insights, views and expertise
