As we approach Father’s Day, this Sunday, Critical Discourse will engage in a lively discussion of the MAN – the Father. Baba, Abu, Aboji, SIfu, Daddy

Strong, striving mightily, protector and maintainer. At least this is what we would hope to see in men.

I expect this discussion to be different in tone, from the Critical Discourse segment on mothers (Yo Mama!). After all, fathers bring a different dynamic to the Family Table.

Particularly when the child is young, the father exudes strength, confidence and assuredness. However, contrary to popular belief, fathers can be quite compassionate and sensitive.

The father, as the head of his family, must shoulder an awesome burden to assure that his family, according to the Holy Qur’an, is saved from a fire, whose fuel is “men and stones”.

Unlike the mother, he is required to maintain, protect and provide. His presence should be felt, whether at home or away, as what he establishes, begins to take root.

What about your father? What do you know remember about him? For those of you who are fathers, how has fatherhood been for you? Has the fatherhood role been demeaned and unappreciated? What advice can you give to our young men who will become fathers, God-Willing?
