Howard Liles on new walker for elderly & SXSW & Women's History Month

As an undergraduate engineering student at MIT, Howard Liles designed the StandUp Walker, incorporating a stand-assist device with features of a traditional walker.  He later refined this walker as a Master's sudent at Georgia Tech.  This is a walker that helps users to safely and easily stand from almost any seated position.  Howard designed this solution to help his grandmother stand up after a devastating fall and hip injury.  While she was trying to push up from a soft mattress and grab for the IV pole for support, she wanted to remain independent and get up and down on her own.  Howard refined the walker to make sure it didn't look institutional.  Howard Liles joins us to talk about his invention!

In keeping with Women's History Month, we will talk about advances women have made, some advances that haven't been made, women and voting, AND, since a large percentage of caregivers are women, we'll talk about Caring for the Caregiver and Self-Love.
