Spiritual and physical adultery is sin. Hosea 4:1-10
God first started speaking to Hoses in the beginning of the book Hoses 1:2-3 verses states: 2 The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And the Lord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and bare him a son. Gomer was considered a lady of leisure, a prostitute. I know that Hoses must have wondered why God would ask him to do such a thing, but he obeyed. Gomer bearded Hoses three children and I could image if Hosea had to wonder if all of them was his. The most controversial element of this story is that Hosea's children were pulled into the elaborate picture in which Gomer represented the Israelites' spiritual adultery. God commanded Hosea to name his children in a way that reflected God's rejection of Israel. Jezreel: God sows or God scatters. His name was a sign of God's judgment on the house of Jehu and the kingdom of Israel.
The question has been asked over and over again: Why would God command such a thing? Why would God command Hosea and his family into such painful situations? The main answer can be summed up in the phrase, "Desperate times call for desperate measures."
