We must stop making it up as we go. Proverbs 3:5-6 

We must use the Word of God for our moral compass.

Proverb 5: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  6:  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

First, the main reason we should trust God is that He is worthy of our trust.  Think of all the bountiful blessing He has bestowed upon you and yours throughout your life.   And if that is not enough “Worthy is the Lamb that takes away the sins of the world”.

Second, we learn to trust God as we see how He has proven Himself to be trustworthy in our lives and the lives of others.  All of God’s promises are in His Word for all to see and the records of their fulfillment.

Third reason to trust God is that we really have no sensible alternative. Should we trust in ourselves or in others who may be sinful, unpredictable, unreliable, have limited wisdom, and who frequently make bad choices and decisions, or often swayed by emotion?
