The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Gerry Teachman. We will discuss this question: What Should Be The Role Of A School Teacher?

Gerard Teachman was born on March 12, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended 10 years of school in Detroit public schools and graduated from Royal Oak high school in January,1956. In September, 1956, he entered Wayne State University. After one year of college, he concluded he was not ready for college. Consequently, he joined the army. He spent three years in the Army Security Agency and was selected to study German at the Army language school in Monterey, California. After he successfully completed the six month intensive program, he was stationed for two years in Coburg, Germany.

He was discharged in Germany in June of 1960 and spent July, August and September traveling throughout Europe. He returned home in mid September,1960 and reenrolled in Wayne State University. He received a bachelors degree in liberal arts, with majors in German, English and History in August 1962 and Masters of Arts in Teaching degree in foreign language education in 1964.

In June of 1963, He attended a seven week advanced German program in Passau, Germany, which was sponsored by the German government. Upon his return, he started teaching at Bloomfield Hills Andover High School. He taught German and american studies and coached the first public school soccer team in Michigan. In the summer of 1964, he received a National Foreign Language scholarship that allowed him to study Advanced German Culture at Hofstra University.

He left Bloomfield Hills H.S. in June, 1964 and started teaching at Detroit Cooley H.S., which he had attended for a year after junior high school. In September, 1965, he started teaching in Lessenger junior high school in Detroit, where he taught language arts.
