Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor Engaged to Firefighter Who Saved Her

A survivor of the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013, Roseann has spent the last four years adjusting to life as an amputee—she lost her left leg in the bombing—but she hasn’t had to go it alone. In her first memoir, PERFECT STRANGERS: Friendship, Strength, and Recovery after Boston’s Worst DayRoseann introduces readers to the three people who saved her life on Marathon Monday 2013:

  • Mike Materia: Roseann’s fireman turned fiancé and Iraq war vet, he held her hand the whole way to Mass General and he’s still holding her hand today. They are set to be wed this fall.
  • Shana Cottone: A Boston police officer who commandeered a paddy wagon to transfer Roseann to the hospital, she’s also planning her wedding to her partner this fall. Mike is serving as bridesman.
  • Shores Salter: A college student enjoying the long weekend on that Marathon Monday, he rushed into the chaos and applied the tourniquet to Roseann’s leg that saved her life. He ran the marathon this year for the first time in support of the Heather Abbott Foundation.
