Injustice: The Film the Police Tried to Ban

Today, Zhana is joined by Ken Fero, the director of Injustice. 

Injustice was released 19 years ago, at which time the police repeatedly tried to ban it.  Injustice chronicled the fights of seven families to receive justice after their family members died in encounters with the police.  One of them was the family of Joy Gardner.  Obviously, the more the police tried to ban the film, the more people wanted to see it, and Zhana was privileged to see it. 

Ken Fero says: 

The Police Federation accused us of libel, all we did was to present the truth that the evidence of the murder and manslaughter by the police in the killings of Black people in the UK was undeniable. We were also accused of incitement to riot. They tried to kill the film by threatening cinema screenings also, but public support, the resistance of the families and our determination not to back down all meant that the film about human right abuses in the UK did get shown to great international acclaim and had a political impact. 

Ultraviolence continues this struggle for truth and justice and shows that resistance can be effective. World premier at London Film Festival 12 October 2020.
