 The day I was introduced to a character in one word in the Narrative of someone else story. 

As a child of about 6 years of age, my grandmother sent me to the store. Leaving the store, the bright lights from the park caught my eyes. I had never seen lights from the park so out of curiosity, I ran across the streets to experience an amazing sight. There were little boys playing in uniforms at a baseball game. Wow, I only saw that on TV! But, here it was right before me in plain sight, it was more than a dream. 

A voice came from in back of me saying “Why are you standing there?” My response was, “I am watching the boys play baseball” he volleyed back “Can’t you read?” I proudly said “ I can read.”  He continued, What does that sign say?”  I read aloud No Dogs and Niggers allowed in here.”  As he sat on his bike getting a little irritated with me, he questioned me again, "Why are you still standing there, girl! Get away from that gate and fence!”  

"Why? I am just looking!", I retorted. "Do you know what that sign means?", the man said more angry. "A little? I know what a dog is but, I don’t know what this word nigger means." He raised his leg from the bike and swore at me screaming you better get away from that fence. "The nigger is you!", said this grown hostile man to a 6 year child.
