Business is the backbone of a thriving economy, and small businesses provide the majority of jobs that employ the population. These small business are created and operated by families. Often immigrants come to this country, the U.S.A., with the intentions to start a business in order to employ family members so that everyone in the family has a job. An organized group of families may even contribute to the art up capital of each family’s business. However African American families who descend from the slave experience have lost the concept of business as a means of independence, wealth building and empowerment. In the decades after emancipation, Booker Washington, founder of Tuskegee institute, stressed that people need to learn practical skills and trades in order to earn living its their hands. How do we re-create the independent community economy.
