How Do We Stop The Prison Industrial Complex From Destroying Our Families?

Many families have been affected by the criminal justice system, either as parents separated from their children or children separated from their parents. Jail has become a way of life for many who are suffering from economic depravation, simply because whenever they get arrested, whether guilty of a crime or not, they have no money to pay the bail. The documentary "Thirteenth", now available on Netflix, reveals that the 13th Amendment was designed to preserve slavery thorugh the prison system. Many who are innocent are urged by public defenders to plea bargain, and end up serving time in prison just to avoid a lengthy trial in which they may be found guilty and sentenced to even longer time. Prison is America's extension of slavery, because it provides the low paid or no paid labor force for America's big business. How do we stop the growth of the Prison Industrial Complex?
