State Rep. Mary Flowers Examines Police Misconduct In Laquan McDonald Shooting

What are the consequences when public servants, employed by the taxpayers, violate the public's trust? The city of Chicago erupted in protest over the Thanksgiving weekend after the release of the dashcam video graphically showing the killing of 17 year old Laquan McDonald by police officer Jason Van Dyke in 2014. For an entire year, this video has been withheld, and with its court ordered release came a series of questions as to who was involved in the coverup. Young Laquan, a ward of the State, should have received more care, support, and intervention, it seems, rather than to be shot to death for carrying a knife with which he allegedly was puncturing car tires. Illinois State Representative Mary Flowers joins us today to discuss the many levels of official misconduct that need to be addressed by elected officials as well as the voting public, in holding those accountable who violate the public trust. Can new laws and new regulations protect citizens from police abuse? Should the entire police force be scrapped and all forced to re-apply? Should mandatory psychological exams be instituted before an officer is hired? How do we weed out those who have already racked up complaints for excessive force, before they kill someone else
