Nursing Sorority Encourages Girls To Enter Medical Field

There was a time when whites did not want black nurses to attend to them, even though black women had been feeding them and nursing them back to health during slavery. But a nurse was a professional position, sometimes more prominent in the hospital than the doctor in saving a patient's life. Black women who broke the barriers in the field of nursing recently celebrated the 50 year anniversary of the 1965 graduating class of Provident School ofNursing. This past weekend October 16, they celebrated the Founder of a nursing sorority that continues to provide scholarships for African American women in the field of nursing. Today Chi Eta Phi sorority Chicago Chapter president Toni Oats discusses the challenges in the field of nursing and the importance of encouraging our girls to excel in math and science, critical skills they'll need ins health care industry.
