Sports for children is more than recreation. It's physical health maintenance. In many schools across the country, when it comes to cutting programs in order to balance the budget for elementary schools, many school boards have elected to eliminate sports programs. These decisions are never made for the affluent elementary schools, those schools with complete track and field facilities, gymnastics equipment, Olympic size pools and even skating rinks for their students to master ice skating. These decisions are only made for the inner city, urban (in other words predominantly African American and Latino) schools. Chicago peace activist and youth advocate Coach Ernest Radcliff discusses the impact of cutting sports programs for youth in public schools and how parents can fight back.
