There are laws protecting freedom of speech, but shouldn't there be laws protecting children from profane, vulgar speech? Shouldn't parents have a right to prevent their children from being exposed to lewd descriptions of sexual acts and vulgar terms used to describe sexual behavior? When public airwaves are used to pour out profanity whether we want to hear it or not, our rights to public decency are being violated. We can't protect our children's innocence. Should it be against the law to play profanity in public, such as blasting vulgar songs from your car? Should it be a national law, so that it is enforced in every State? How would we word such a law? Which vulgar and profane words should be outlawed? Should that include vulgar words in other widely spoken languages, like Spanish? What should be the penalty, a fine? How much, $500? Should violators receive jail time?
