Americans look at films of starving homeless masses in so called "third world" countries and shake their heads in pity, while at the same time turning away in disgust at the starving homeless masses withing the United States. Welfare programs don't always work, particularly when a person has no address. Homelessness can cause a family to lose all human rights, including the right to shelter, food, water, clothing, health care, and life itself. The assumption is that America is the land of plenty, and if you're starving and living on the street, you must be doing something wrong - drugs, alcohol, something - to keep you from pulling yourself up. But there are times when people lose everything - house fires, etc. - and really need a hand. Is the Government morally obligated to feed and house the poor? Our guests today discuss the frustration many feel at the callous way the government has chosen to cut away many of the survival programs for low income families.
