Who is the ultimate authority in a child's life - the parents or the State? When Dorothy Austin, mother of two sons, was falsely accused of having a psychological illness, she found herself in a seven year battle with the State of Illinois over custody of her son Shamir, then an eight year old child. Deprived of his mother after seven years, Shamir, now a 15 year old teenager, is desperate to come home. But the State simply will not let him go. Today, Dorothy Austin is fighting back. She has joined forces with supporters and other parents and launched a national organization: PROTECT, which stands for Parental Rights Organization To End Children's Tears. This organization was founded to raise money for legal fees for parents whose parental rights were wrongfully terminated, and to investigate and expose those attorneys, judges, and social service agency officials who knowingly make decisions that destructively tear families apart. Today, Ms. Austin discusses her fundraising efforts to enable her to hire the competent attorney who will help get her son Shamir back, and pursue punitive damages against those responsible for him being held hostage by the State for seven years.  Her organization PROTECT will provide support for other parents in similar situations.
