Each year during February, known as Black History Month, America reflects on its ugly past of enslavement of African people, the economic system which enabled this nation to rise to the position of a world power. The descendants of those kidnapped Africans are well entrenched into the American society, having survived Slavery, Jim Crow, lynching, and every kind of economic discrimination. But there are observable damages to the African American family as a result of generations of racial injustice. What should survivors receive as compensation? Who should pay and for how long? Barbara Adjoa Baker of NCOBRA (National Coalition Of Blacks for Reparations in America) discusses the Reparations movement, the status of the proposed federal legislation addressing it, and what the next step should be.
