Should Schools Change What They Teach About Native Americans and Thanksgiving?

American schools teach a basic formula when it comes to early U.S. History: Christopher Columbus discovered America, then the Pilgrims came and spent a cold winter, the Native Americans helped them survive by showing them how to grow corn, they all had a big turkey dinner and that was the first Thanksgiving. And everybody lived happily ever after. The story sounds nice but there is an ugly side to U.S. History that many Native Americans say ought to be told. Why did relations between Native Americans and European immigrants turn sour and later violent? Should American children be told a story that's extremely uncomplimentary to the Founding Fathers of the nation? Does America owe reparations to the Native American people for human rights violations? Should the Thanksgiving story be revised so as to teach a greater lesson about morals, ethics, values, and respect for the culture of others?
