Since the suspension of professional football player Adrian Peterson stemming from charges that he abused his four year old son by whipping him with a tree switch, the debate has been ongoing as to the fairness of this decision. Proponents of corporal punishment say it is a cultural misunderstanding; being "disciplined" with a "switch" is a common southern practice, and most black families, it is argued, use this method of punishment all the time.
