"Music soothes the savage beast" so the saying goes. Many outdoor, free concerts have quelled urban violence and unrest. A song can express deep pain and allow us to blow off steam. There is a lot of pent up frustration among youth, and it is unfortunately acted out in violence towards one another. This Friday, a panel of experts will take a look at the healing power of music as a peaceful solution to the crisis of violence in our homes, schools, and streets. There is a natural way to bring peace, without police, guns, or jail cells. Youth advocate Reba Brown discusses the upcoming program and how we can employ a nonviolent solution to the crisis of violence. Lawton Avery Merritt, author of Lil' Johnnie On The Block, discusses how to help young people recognize how they are being negatively influenced by the music they hear. Therapist Howard Williams looks at the psychological impact of today's music.
