Public schools are closing in cities across America and the ones that remain open are questionable when it comes to offering relevant information and preparation for life in a safe learning environment. But whereas public schools have often been dismal failures in America's urban areas, private, culturally based schools have had tremendous success. What is the missing ingredient. Haki and Safisha Madhubuti, founders of The Institute of Positive Education, discuss their journey as educators, publishers, and founders of several learning institutions that focus on African history and cultural values. As IPE prepares for an anniversary celebration this weekend, the Madhubutis reflect on the social andfinancial challenges involved in running independent schools.
