The big news in the movie industry is that the Golden Globe Awards were given out on Monday, January 13, 2014 and the film 12 Years A Slave won in the category Best Motion Picture, Drama. We're grateful that the talent that went into making this film was honored. But the real power of these films lies in how we use them to educate the upcoming generation, so that they may learn from the mistakes of their ancestors. There are many powerful films that can be used to impart moral values, ethics, compassion, and fairness if shown in the classroom as part of the school history curriculum.  Many of the movies that struck emotional cords can be used as teaching tools. What movies do you think should be part of the learning process in helping young people reject the evils of racism, sexism, classism and bigotry of all kinds?  The movie "12 Years A Slave?", "Malcolm X"? "Ghandi"? The new film "Mandela"? How about old films like "Sounder"? What other films do you think can be used to raise the consciousness of young people, particularly if the film is followed by indepth discussions on injustice and what they can do to create a better society in their lifetime?
