Free labor was a strong force in the growth of America's southern economy, and after emancipation, there was simply no way the farming and business community were going to allow this labor force to disappear. The 13th Amendment didn't abolish slavery - it merely restricts it to those convicted of crimes and imprisoned. America jails more of its citizens than any other nation, basically to maintain the economic benefit of free labor.  The majority of prisoners are still African American, with some Hispanics and a few poor whites. As civic leaders in Chicago prepare to file a class action suit against Cook County Jail on behalf of those who have been held in jail without a trial for as many as five years, while providing free labor for many prominent American companies, many across the country are examining the continued institutionalization of white supremacy under the Criminal Justice System. What can we do to truly end slavery and racial injustice. Author Neely Fuller examines how this system of racism is ingrained in American culture and what must be done to break its stranglehold.
