The cat scratches up all the furniture and sometimes craps where it's not supposed to, but it catches the mice. Do you keep it, or do you get rid of it? The dog chews up shoes, steals food and will shit in the house if you don't walk the dog. Nobody likes to walk the dog, not even the kids, but the kids love the dog. Do you keep the dog? The dog is a purebred. Does it matter? Pet owners who are very humanitarian may put up with a lot of things that pet owners who have more human expectations will. Putting up with a bad pet can be similar to putting up with a bad lover, or spouse. They can both feel like you paid for them and might want to get a return on your investment. It's an odd approach to love, but not necessarily an uncommon one. Have you ever dropped a cat off at a place an hour drive away? Does that seem cruel to you? Plenty have done it. You have to be pretty fed up to do it.
