Nobody likes to be embarrassed, but some embarrassments are magnified when they happen in front of people. Like, being broke can be embarrassing, but when you get to the cash register at the market and don't have enough money to pay for your groceries, that can crush some people, especially if the line was long and people seem agitated in line. Some people wouldn't be embarrassed by that either way, but other people won't be able to take it.
