You might separate for some good reasons, but most of the time when you divide something, it's not such a good thing.Couples separate in a marriage. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? It probably depends on how the marriage was going in the 1st place. You can also get separated from family members. That's not usually a good thing, but it can be for some good reasons, like getting a job in a different state. When you divide a family, that's probably not a good thing. In a divorce where some of the children are going with the mother and some are going with the father, is it a division, or a separation? If you keep friends apart, is that a separation, or a divide?
