This week on Urban Therapy with SUN we're gonna talk about Postpartum Depression in women as well as men.
Postpartum depression is is the depressive state that a person may suffer from after a the birth of a child. It can be a very serious condition because it can hamper the development of a child by a parent. A parent can become overwhelmed with sadness and become neglectful of their parental duties. They can become neglectful of feeding, holding, loving, consoling, teaching, talking to, reading to, changing diapers, cleaning and nurturing a child in their depression. At it's worst a parent can even become physically or emotionally abusive to a child if they go untreated and get professional help. Some cases result in death.

Men suffer from postpartum depression as well which is something that goes unnoticed by many people. The differences between men and women with postpartum depression is that with men it's not caused by hormonal changes. There may be external factors at play that may be the cause. Fathers may not be as playful as they would normally be and may try to compensate for their depression by overindulging food or alcohol or drugs or gambling etc. They may withdraw fro familial duties in the home and my withdraw.

Postpartum depression is very serious. Please check out this show even if you don't have children. The welfare and safety of a child can depend on your knowledge.
