Let's Do Lunch! visits Main Street Eatery in Lynchburg, Virginia; named for the street it resides on. Serving only dinner, married owners Michaela and Urs Gabathuler, also the chef, came from Switzerland to realize their dreams. Settling in Lynchburg, they fell for the house on Main Street dating back to 1875. Converting it from a men's store with their son's help, they stripped it down to it's original brick making it homey with a romantic glow.
The menu features seafood specialties like Sea Bass Velasca with baby shrimp and crabmeat, and all-you-can-eat mussels prepared five different ways. Urs tells host Robin Milling the reigning number to beat is seven courses. He expertly marries Swiss influences with local lamb, rabbit and goat cheese melted on crostinis with chunks of garlic and tomatoes. The veal is Zurich-style with a chardonnay creme fraiche and mushroom sauce.
Urs is a people person and welcoming so the kitchen is exposed. The only way to the bathroom is through the kitchen where you are greeted with waves from the sous chef. The ultimate finish is the Viennese table wheeled seductively by with mouth watering desserts made fresh daily so if you snooze, you lose! The chocolate tort has Swiss chocolate like lava dripping on vanilla icecream drizzled with homemade caramel. It's a perfect alpine mountain that you don't want to dig into, but Urs says, 'you don't think you're gonna make it, but most of the people do!'
