NABWIC Talks Radio Today We Will Be Speaking With Shirley McCall and Shelly Karriem, educators at TransTech Academy. 

Ms. McCall is presently the Coordinator of the TransTech Academy at Cardozo High School.  The program is designed to impart the values of higher education, constructive employment and careers in the various models of transportation. 

Ms. Karriem is currently the Director of the Academy of Construction and Design at Cardozo High School, a joint venture between D.C. Public Schools and the DC Students Construction Trades Foundation.  The Academy teaches high school students construction trades, including: carpentry, electrical, plumbing as well as a certified "green building" curriculum.

TransTech Academy currently features three career pathways; aviation/aeronautics, pre-engineering and electro-mechanical technology training.  Plans are underway to add yet another pathway in Logistics and Supply Chain Mgmt in the Fall 2013.

Over six hundred students have completed the program.  Eighty-five percent have gone on to college. Seventy percent have joined the military and eight percent are working in on of these respective fields.  TransTech Academy was established in 1991 as the first transportation studies academy in the Washington Metropolitan area.  The program is designed to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace.
