For as long as there have been celebrities and their fans who follow them every single day,
there have been those taking advantage of this and creating their death hoax. It takes only a
few hours or in some cases minutes for shocking news like celebrities death to spread all over
the internet. It’s for sure disturbing for celebrities, their families and inner circle, and even their
fans who are very sensitive about them.
Sylvester Stallone, Paul McCartney, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears are only a few
among hundreds of celebrities who have been killed by online media in recent years.
Sylvester Stallone had to take it to social media after the rumours in 2018 to reassure the world
that he is still alive after a hoax began circulating on Facebook and Twitter that claimed the
actor had died at the age of 71 following a battle with prostate cancer. “Please ignore this
stupidity; alive and well and happy and healthy.” he wrote in the post. “Still punching!” he added,
referring to his most famous character, Rocky Balboa.
Deadorkicking.com is a website which has put its mission to fight with death hoaxes by reporting
the life status of celebrities and notable people. Their promise is not updating a person’s info
before sufficient research is done and enough proof is provided.
Usually, the sources of these false news are unknown. Whether the hoax is created to benefit of
some or just as an awful joke, it has to stop before damaging the reliability of online news more
than this.
News websites should continually check that the information published on their sites is accurate
and should avoid publishing anything without proof. Also, knowing the power of social media,
each individual should also stop sharing if they are not sure the content is truth.
