The eighth day of Passover is traditionally associated with the Advent of the King Messiah, as Righteous Judge. For this reason, the haftorah reading on that day contains many prophecies which refer to the time of the final redemption of Israel. Among the best-known of these: “The wolf will dwell with the lamb; the leopard will lie down with a young goat” “He will raise a banner for the nations and gather in the exiles of Israel.”

The Torah originally commanded us to celebrate Pesach for seven days. When our people were exiled, however, a certain degree of doubt arose regarding the exact date on which the holidays should be celebrated. To solve the problem of determining the Jewish calendar in exile, our sages added an extra day to each festival.
